We are celebrating 10 years in 2017
The Tailrace Centre is a dream that actually happened but its not finished yet.
It is an extraordinary dream of giving.
To realise a dream financial giving has to happen. The Tailrace Centre story is not the story of a successful entrepreneur who pioneered a dream. It is the story of a group of people who came together, who shared a story and who gave to a dream.
In 2005, the people gave. They gave 2 million dollars, some giving on the day and others made pledges. It was one of Launceston’s greatest outpourings of giving. People gave because they wanted to build something through which they could express their love, their acceptance and their desire to be present to humanity regardless of age, color, religion or class.
But it is not only a story of extraordinary financial giving – which by the way continues.
It is an extraordinary dream of people giving who they are to the community.
I wish it was possible for the walls of Tailrace to speak their story. So many stories of love.
We live in a world where everyone wants to change the world, but nobody wants to do the small thing that makes just one person feel loved.
Day in day out I watch both employees and volunteers love people in quiet simple ways that no one will ever know about.
One of the most precious stories we have is our Date Night. Being able to offer to people the opportunity in the midst of the hard and the hustle time. I don’t know how many times I have been stopped and told “My relationship wouldn’t be together without Date Night. We learned to communicate, to fall in love again.” Date Night couldn’t happen without this precious thing called love and community. People giving from their hearts to simply help another person.
I love watching the hundreds of volunteers who come and help run youth camps, school holiday programmes, children’s events and family nights.
Our story is a story of community. Of people rediscovering the beauty and the wonder of being present not perfect to each other. Giving each other the gift of being. It is a story of people discovering they matter.
We have had an incredible team with us over the past 10 years. We are incredibly grateful to them. Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress and working together is treasure.
We have learned much, there have been tough times and great times but our team have chosen to grow, to learn together and to keep committing to developing this elusive thing called community.
The Next 10
We are committed more than ever to the Next 10 Years.
10 years of continuing to build the dream of community.
We have seen how powerful it is.
We want to say thank you to everyone of you who have supported and cherished the dream.
To the team at Tailrace – and this extends beyond the paid workers what can I say except Thank you!
